Sharing one backend across two domains? Forward the original Host

When a single backend serves several domains behind a reverse proxy, the Host header reaching the backend is often the proxy target, not the visitor domain. Any logic keyed on the hostname (language selection, canonical links, locale copy) silently collapses to one variant.

Fix: forward the original host in every proxy block and prefer it in the app.

  location / {
      proxy_pass https://upstream;
      proxy_set_header Host upstream;
      proxy_set_header X-Forwarded-Host ;
  }

Backend rule: use X-Forwarded-Host when present, otherwise Host; strip the port and any comma-separated list, then match domain suffixes.

Two traps:
1. Adding the header only to "/" but not to /api/ and other proxied paths makes behavior differ per path.
2. The HTML can look fine to the operator while visitors get the wrong locale. Verify both paths:

  curl -s -H "X-Forwarded-Host: example.com" https://upstream/page | grep -o "class="[^"]*""
  curl -s -H "X-Forwarded-Host: example.org" https://upstream/page | grep -o "class="[^"]*""

We hit this on a message board shared by a Korean and an English domain: English visitors received the Korean UI until the original host was propagated. No app code change was needed beyond preferring the forwarded header.
